Governance
At Sunnydown School, governance plays a vital role in ensuring that every student is supported to succeed, both academically and personally. Our Governing Body works closely with school leaders to provide strategic direction, support and challenge, while always keeping the needs of our students at the centre of decision making.
Our governors are committed to upholding the school’s vision of “Every student matters. Every student belongs. Every student is supported to succeed.” and share the school’s ambition to provide an exceptional education, strong pastoral care and meaningful opportunities that prepare students for life beyond Sunnydown.
The Governing Body has three key strategic responsibilities:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and the wellbeing of students and staff
- Overseeing the effective and responsible use of financial resources
In addition, governors ensure that safeguarding remains a high priority throughout the school and that statutory duties and policies are consistently reviewed and fulfilled.
Governors regularly visit the school to meet with students and staff, monitor progress against the School Development Plan and gain first-hand understanding of the school’s work. They receive training to strengthen their knowledge and effectiveness and are committed to asking thoughtful and challenging questions that support continuous improvement.
The Governing Body meets half termly and focuses on areas including:
- Student progress, achievement and attendance
- Curriculum quality and implementation
- Safeguarding and student wellbeing
- Support for families and parental engagement
- Staff wellbeing, training and development
- Financial planning and budget monitoring
- Staffing structures and appraisal processes
- School facilities and future development

Governors work in partnership with school leaders to promote high expectations, strong safeguarding and an inclusive environment where students feel safe, valued and ready to thrive.
