Key Stage 3 Curriculum
At Sunnydown School, our Key Stage 3 curriculum provides the foundation for each student’s journey through secondary education. It is designed to re-engage students in learning, build confidence and develop the knowledge and skills needed for future success.
Rooted in our belief that every student belongs, the curriculum is carefully structured to support students as they join the school, many with a range of needs. Strong relationships, consistent routines and a deep understanding of each individual ensure that students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
We place a strong emphasis on literacy as the key to all learning. Through a whole-school approach, including Bedrock Learning and Accelerated Reader, students develop the reading, comprehension and communication skills needed to access the full curriculum. Our new school library, opening in September 2026, will further support this by providing a dedicated space for reading, reflection and independent learning.

Students experience a broad and balanced curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education, alongside a wide range of creative, technical and humanities subjects. This ensures that all students develop a broad set of skills and are able to discover their strengths and interests.
A key feature of our provision is the Friday Curriculum, which provides opportunities for project-based learning, co-curricular experiences and personal development. This enables students to apply their learning in real-world contexts while developing independence, confidence and essential life skills.

Pastoral care is fully integrated into the curriculum, ensuring that students are supported both academically and emotionally. This approach allows every student to make progress from their starting point and prepares them for the next stage of their education.
By the end of Year 9, students are confident learners who are ready to make informed choices and move successfully into Key Stage 4.
