Our History
Portley House, home of Sunnydown School since 1983
Sunnydown School is proud of its rich history, strong sense of community and the unique character that makes our school such a special place to learn and grow.
At the heart of the school is Portley House, a beautiful Victorian building full of history and charm. Built in 1856 for Charles Dingwall, a London wine merchant, the house has stood proudly in Caterham for more than 150 years. There has long been local interest in the building’s connection to the port wine trade, with stories linking it to the founders of Taylor’s Port, adding to the character and heritage of the site.
Originally built as a family home, Portley House became one of the first grand houses developed in Caterham following the arrival of the railway. Many of its original features and period character remain today, giving the school a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is appreciated by students, staff and visitors alike.
The building later became Portley House Boarding Special School and developed a long tradition of residential education and care. Boarding remained an important part of Sunnydown for many years, supporting students from across Surrey and helping young people build independence, friendships and confidence within a caring school community. The residential provision officially closed in 2021 as the school continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of students and families.
Since Sunnydown School moved to the site in 1983, the school has continued to grow and develop while carefully preserving the history and spirit of the building. Over the years, modern classrooms and specialist facilities have been added to support high quality teaching and learning, creating an environment where tradition and innovation sit side by side.
Sunnydown has always been more than just a school building. It is a community built on kindness, respect and positive relationships.
Generations of students have walked through the doors of Portley House, each contributing to the life and story of the school. The warmth, support and sense of belonging felt across the school today remain central to everything we do.
As Sunnydown continues to grow, we remain proud of our past and excited for the future. Our history reminds us of where we have come from, while inspiring us to continue providing outstanding opportunities, care and support for every young person in our community.
