Pastoral Care

We are proud to be a Specialist School, supporting students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) whose needs are centred around social communication and interaction, frequently linked with autism.

At Sunnydown, pastoral care is not an addition to our provision, it is the foundation of our school, rooted in our belief that every boy matters, every boy belongs, and every boy is supported to achieve his very best.

Exceptional pastoral care

Our vision is built on strong relationships, where every student is known, understood and valued as an individual. We recognise that when a young person feels safe, accepted and secure, they are able to grow in confidence, engage in learning and begin to understand their own potential. It is this sense of belonging that underpins all aspects of our pastoral approach and drives our unwavering commitment to safeguarding and emotional wellbeing.

At Sunnydown, our work begins with a deep understanding of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. We prioritise safety, trust and emotional security, recognising that these are the essential first steps in enabling learning. When these needs are met, students are able to develop resilience, build relationships and access the curriculum with confidence.

Building on this foundation, our pastoral practice is rooted in the Thrive Approach, which provides a structured and developmental framework for supporting emotional wellbeing. Through this approach, we explicitly teach emotional literacy, self-regulation and social understanding, enabling students to navigate both their internal experiences and the world around them.

Alongside this, our work is informed by trauma-informed practice, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication. Our staff respond with consistency, empathy and relational understanding, ensuring that students feel safe, respected and supported. This allows us to move beyond behaviour management and instead focus on long-term personal development and positive change.

Our pastoral provision reflects our values of care, ambition and belonging. It is delivered through a highly skilled team, including Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads, Thrive practitioners and ELSA-trained staff, who provide both proactive and responsive support.

This includes planned interventions, in-the-moment guidance, restorative approaches and the explicit teaching of mindfulness, communication and emotional regulation.

Body 3

This work is closely aligned with our wider curriculum, which we understand in its broadest sense as the full range of experiences that shape a young person’s development. Through our carefully designed curriculum, including our Friday enrichment & PSHE offer, students are supported to develop confidence, independence and resilience, preparing them for life beyond school.

Ultimately, our pastoral approach reflects our mission, RICE³, developing resilience, independence and cooperation through encouragement, enablement and empowerment. By placing relationships, belonging and emotional wellbeing at the heart of our school, we create an environment in which every student can thrive, achieve and take their place as a confident and capable member of a modern and changing world.

At Sunnydown, we believe education must extend beyond the classroom. Our co-curricular programme is a core entitlement for every student, designed to develop the confidence, independence and character needed to succeed in life.
